Contemporary addition to a 1970s family home

Contemporary addition to a 1970s family home

Project Description:

A contemporary design approach was adopted for this extension to a detached family home in Chichester.

In contrast to the existing building the extension is a simple rendered form with a subtle glazed link to the main house. The extension’s focal element is a large cantilevered corner and frameless bi-fold door which affords light and a seamless transition between the internal and outside spaces of the private gardens.

The flat roof is designed as a low-maintenance sedum ‘green roof’ with good rain water filtration, good insulation properties while being aesthetically pleasing. Concealed flat roof windows puncture the interior spaces below affording light and ventilation deep into the floor plan.

The interior spaces have clean lines and generous doorways in concert with the tall curtain glazing creating a sense of light and space greater than its volume.

This small-scale project provides the desired additional living space for a growing family and is a fine example of projects that can be commissioned on a cost-effective budget without compromising its design or materials.
